Room Pop!
Room Pop is an online interactive music festival; going with the fact that there are fans of this music genre scattered globally, I wanted there to be a chance that everyone can participate.
An ode to the Japanese music genre of City Pop— In this self initiated project, I wanted to find a way where I could pay homage and produce an experience that other fans of City Pop would appreciate, as well as enjoy.
The concept was created well before the COVID-19 outbreak and the self isolation/quarantine period in the UK. I personally found it interesting that this project did reflect the self isolation environment unintentionally— and that it did push people to see the light in staying at home.
I wanted this whole festival experience to be consistent and be as immersive as it can be, this involved having the information pages be designed as if they were part of the buildings as well. I kept the simplistic approach, as I did want the focal point to be the information. I wanted the information piece to actually be part of the “room” they were taking part in. For example, a shopping list tapped onto a fridge, laundry hanging to dry, cross stitch art and a poster in a bedroom.

In the festival, there are 4 different “festival rooms”, in which there are split based on the different emotions and vibes the audience would possibly be into:
The “Criers Room” is the opposite of the previous room. This room encourages people to let their tears out and cry-dance around their room. As the room suggests, particularly sad music plays in this room; the kind of songs that you listen to in the pouring rain.
The “Weirdos Room” is the underground and underbelly of city pop; the foundation but often overlooked part of the music genre. This room is for people who are looking for something a little weird and psychedelic. In this room, songs with synthesisers and weird lyrics are played here.
The “Lovers Room” is built specifically for those who are a couple (especially those who dance around the kitchen), or individuals who just love love. In this room, romantic and happy songs are played.
And finally, in the “Dancers Room”, is where people who just wants to dance their troubles and the night away. This is where the popular City Pop songs are played, which are ultimately songs that are very upbeat and generate a very happy atmosphere.
