If You Don’t Know, Now You Know!

A look into Hip-Hop’s influential artists and their approach to social issues.

When the brief asked ‘How can graphic design do good?' I wanted to take this opportunity to shift people’s perception on a topic that is often misinterpreted.

I decided to go with hip-hop; a subject matter in which I didn’t know a lot about in terms of it’s history and influence, but knew that it was a heavily misrepresented and misunderstood.

I knew that many who don’t listen to hip-hop perhaps view the music genre as very braggadocios and violent— so my aim for this project was to hopefully shift people’s perception of the musical genre by showcasing and explaining the influence of hip-hop.

The publications were split into 4 volumes: The beginnings, the 1980’s, the 1990’s and the present.

Each volume looked at the political and social issues that were going on, which are often the roots and influences of the songs released during the 3 eras of hip-hop. In the publications that looked at the eras, I looked at 3 artists that specifically made a impact either politically or towards the music industry, and the songs that pushed boundaries. I then close the publication with “honourable mentions” of other songs that helped shaped both hip-hop and the world.
